What is a “Pikler Triangle”?
A Pikler triangle is essentially a simple climbing frame for children. The term Pikler derives from its creator, Dr. Emmi Pikler, a Hungarian pediatrician. It is commonly misspelt as “Pickler” or “Picklar”
The inspiration originating from Dr. Pikler is a child nurturing approach based on a gentle and natural pace. Its focus is on motor development, unfettered movement and uninterrupted imaginative play. Dr. Pikler believed in a child’s instinctive ability to guide their own development.
This is where the Pikler’s triangle comes into play. The climber triangle is a structure that allows children to navigate on at their own pace. The Pikler inspired triangle allows children to explore and find their own boundaries. It also helps develop gross motor skills, physical strength and agility. It encourages free movement, free imaginative roll play.
What age is a Pikler Triangle for?
Classically a Pikler triangle can be introduced at 6 months old and generally be used up until age 5.
At Ligneus Play we have extended both ends of this spectrum and say that the range can be used from 3months to 99yrs.
At 3 months the Nursery triangle can be used to hang toys and mobiles off rungs.
Around 6 months babies can use the rungs of the Pikler triangle to pull up and stand.
From 1-2 years children begin exploring the structure by climbing part way up then back down.
Older children, at 4-5 years of age, are able to climb all the way to the top and climb over and down the other side.
The Junior ranges and addons such as slides and ladders extend the age range for 6-12 years. Further accessories expand functionality even more. These functions include classroom desks and art easels.
The variety of addons allow for the older children to really explore their creative sides. Building dens and forts, putting on shows and displays for open ended play are fundamental to early development.
Further accessories allow the triangle to be transformed to stand alone desks for adults. As an adult desk it can be used concurrently as a desk or easel for your child. Daddy and Mummy day-care has never been so enjoyable.
Is a Pikler Triangle Montessori?
The Pikler triangle is often found in Montessori inspired environments such as classrooms and homes. It isn’t strictly Montessori however it does fit perfectly with the philosophy.
How to Use a Pikler Triangle
A child’s imagination mean the Pikler triangle has boundless indoor play uses. From the straight forward climbing to the building of dens by draping sheets and blankets.
There are many accessories in the range that expand its use for all ages. From extensions to play such as the climb n slides, ladders and arches to multifunctional desk and easel accessories.
All the different components are design to work together so you can build on your range as you see fit. Many just start with the triangle and then add the climb n slide and arch for example. Further on down the line they are often interested in creating a workspace from it such as a desk or artist easel.
